Doctrine of Man Genesis 1:26-28, 2:7, Ephesians 2:10

Doctrine of Man Genesis 1:26-28, 2:7, Ephesians 2:10

Man is created in God, created in the image of God, created for dominion, and created with a free will.

1.  Man is created by God  Hebrew has two words for man (Adam and Ish)

Gen 1:26-28: Verse 26-the planning of man, Verse 27-the creation of man, Verse 28-the blessing of man

God introduces other creation acts with  “Let there be light,” 5 times. With man, the command is different, “Let us make man”. Man is the reason why the rest of the creation was made. The former speaks as God’s authority in creation. Now God creates with a relational affection. Man was not made in the likeness of any creature  created before but in the likeness of God. Between God and man there is a distinction. Jesus is the only image of God in having the same nature. Col. 1:15-17 – Jesus is the creator

2.  Man is created in the image and likeness of God

Gen. 2:7 man (ish)  God breathed into man the “breath of life” created the soul ( body and soul). Gen. 2:21 women (ishah)   Ecc. 12:7 tells us that “and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” Gen. 1:26-27 “image” and “likeness”; Rom. 2:15 “law of God written on their hearts”

3.  Man is created to have dominion

Gen. 1:26-27 and in 2:15 man is having dominion but still has to work 2:19 -man becomes a zoologist.

4.  Man is created in free will

Even in the Garden of Eden, Man had a free will. He could choose to obey or not to obey. James 1:14 every man is tempted. Ecc. 7:29 God made mankind upright, but men have gone in search of many schemes.” Ephesians 2:10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works,…” –  in 4 aspects.

a. The new man is a new creature; and God is its Creator.

b. It is a new birth (creation), and we are born or begotten of His will. Created unto good works, with a design that we should be fruitful in them.

c. Which God hath before decreed and appointed.

d. That is, by blessing us with the knowledge of His will, we should walk in it.

“workmanship”- product or fabric, “created”-make or form, “prepared in advance”- prepared beforehand. The passage is speaking of how God through His CREATIVE grace has saved us.

Conversion has 2 parts

repentance- (a negative) and faith- (a positive)

Acts 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”  Faith is a gift of God.
