Earnestly Seeking God-Psalm 63:1-5

Psalm 63:1-5 “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name, I will lift up my hands. 5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.”

This psalm is an expression of David’s faith in God even though he is being chased out of Jerusalem by his own son, Absalom. This story is captured in 2 Samuel 15 where David laments having to separate himself from worship in the sanctuary where the ark of the covenant resided. Notice the comparison he gives to his soul that thirsts for God and his physical body that thirsts for water. His situation was extremely stressful as his enemies pursued him. In the desert, all he could do was earnestly seek the Lord (v. 1), praise Him for His love that is better than life, continue to lift up his voice in singing and his hands in an expression of worship while he remembers the beauty of God’s glory and presence. It was his faith that encouraged him to believe that there would be a time when his enemies would be defeated and when he, once again, would be “satisfied” (v. 5) with the spiritual and physical needs of life. Although he was separated from Jerusalem and all that it meant to him, he never stopped praising God whose love is better than life in a desert or in Jerusalem.

Pray with me: Lord, when I find myself in situations that I did not choose, help me to continue to lift up Your name in praise and worship knowing that You are life and will provide my source and strength wherever I am.
