Forgiveness-Psalm 130:1-6

Psalm 130:1-6 “Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; 2 O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.  3 If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.  5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.”

In the first half of this Psalm, David gives his personal account of the gracious forgiveness of God. He begins by calling “out of the depths” to God (referring to the great difficulty he is in). But he knows that God hears him no matter where he is.

David then proceeds with the confident assurance that God forgives sin. David was quick to confess his sins after his failures and learned that God forgives the sincere cry of the heart. The subject of forgiveness is addressed in the sense that no one could stand before God if he was dealt with according to what is warranted. Without this assurance, David could not continue his journey with God. He says, “with you there is forgiveness.”

Forgiveness is a major theme in both the Old and New Testament and God is faithful to forgive. Remember that it was Jesus who taught His disciples to regularly pray: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Finally, David tells us that in God’s forgiveness, he has learned that there is a healthy kind of fear in the Lord that leads to obedience and devotion. Every day is a new discovery of how God’s presence will carry him through every day.

Pray with me: Lord, each day I face a new challenge where there are successes and some failures. But I know that You are also there when I cry for mercy. Help me to always be quick to ask for forgiveness and learn how to better worship You.
