Give Thanks to the Lord-Psalm 118:1, 22-24, 29

Psalm 118:1, 22-24, 29 “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 23 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

Psalm 118 is the last of the Hallel Psalms that were sung during the Feast of Tabernacles. Like many of the feasts in Israel, it celebrates God’s victory over the nations that opposed Him and His people. This Psalm is written in brackets. The first and last verse are identical and everything in between describes the various aspects of the goodness of God. It reads, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” They were learned by reciting the verses in cadence where the speaker read and the people responded with the following verse. This thanksgiving to the Lord for His goodness can be divided into three categories: first, God’s faithful love, second, the Psalmist triumphed over his enemies and third he gives a significance to the goodness of God in a Messianic prophecy. Verse 22 is repeated in 1 Pete 2:7 describing Jesus.

Nations and kingdoms never thought of Israel as having any power as a nation. But symbolically we see how the Lord used what seemed like a meaningless stone and made it the capstone of His rule. Jesus is the perfect picture of the rejected but triumphant stone that rules forever.

Pray with me: Lord, You are good and Your goodness is eternal. Help me to remember that when I face difficult days, that You are still a good God planning good things for me both here on earth and for all eternity.
