God’s Covenant-Genesis 9:8-17

Genesis 9:8-17 “Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you — the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you — every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” 17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
After the epic flood, we have the account of God’s continuing covenant with His remnant. This covenant included not just a promise to man but to all living creatures that remained. As a constant reminder, God provides a sign in the sky. When a rainbow stretches across the sky, it reminds us of how vast and wide the love and grace of God extends to all creation. In these verses, God repeats this promised covenant twice. In this description, God literally made a covenant with Himself. Since there had been no rain, this was the first appearance of a rainbow. As Noah and his family looked upon the vast rainbow that hung across the sky, we can only imagine their reflection on the grace and peace of God now that the storm is over.
It may be hard to see the peace and love of God when it comes in connection with judgment.
Just as the rainbow was a sign of the covenant of God, so the flood was a sign of the judgment of God. But God judged the wicked, not the righteous. Even though the righteous may face the storms of life because they live in a fallen world, we can be assured that the grace and love of God will sustain us in His arch of love. Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).
Pray with me: Lord, I am grateful for Your covenant of promise in my life. Help me to remember that in the time of storm, I am safe in Your arch of love.
