God’s Love for His People-Song of Solomon 2:1-4

Song of Solomon 2:1-4 “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the maidens. Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my lover among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste. He has taken me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love.”

When reading the Song of Solomon, it may be difficult to find the direct meaning and purpose of this text. Most likely as a young king, this book was written by Solomon and wrote more than 1,000 songs. Its poetic style is composed as an allegorical picture of the love of God for Israel and viewed as an example of Christ and His church. It is also a clear endorsement for the beauty and purity of marital love.
In this portion, Solomon says his beloved (God’s people) likens herself to a rose of Sharon and the lily of the valley. Her beloved is compared to an apple tree among many other trees in a forest. All three of these illustrations (the rose, the lily and the tree) were common in the landscape surrounding Solomon’s territory. But he emphasizes the uniqueness of his beloved among all others; he even typecasts her as a lily among thorns. He continues his allegory by comparing the surprise of finding an apple tree as she walked through the forest. Her contentment would be complete as she rests under the shade and was refreshed by the apple’s sweet taste. Finally, she was honored to see how much his love was for her by displaying a banner for all to see and marching her to the palace banquet table.
Through these allegories, can you grasp how much God esteems His people and how we should regard the greatness of God’s love for us? His banner over us is love!
Pray with me:  Lord, I am reminded again of how special Your love is for Your people. Help me to never take it for granted and live a life that honors Your love.
