“If” and “then” Proverbs 2:1-9

Proverbs 2:1-9 “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair — every good path.”

There are 8 verbs in the first 4 verses (accept, store up, turning, applying, call out, cry aloud, look for and search for) for the purpose of understanding life. These 8 verbs are connected to the small but powerful word “if” mentioned 3 times. This little word is the key to godly understanding. Since the first 4 verses are a message for us, the other little word “then” is the open door to God’s blessings that will follow.
What are these blessings so vitally needed for our lives if we subscribe to these 8 verbs? “Then you will…”(a sure promise from God) understand the fear (reverence) of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” So the question then follows: How does God do this? First, it must be said that it is completely God who does it. These verses clearly state that all these promises are held in God’s hand to be dispensed on those who understand the “if” of verses 1-4.
There are many things in life that we say we need. Everyone has their own list. But life would be less stressful if we allowed God to incorporate the three things mentioned here: 1) His wisdom-by allowing God to teach us what to say or not to say and when. 2) His victory (our badge of protection)-the word “victory” is also translated in other parts of Proverbs as “sound judgment”. It may be hard to figure out how victory and sound judgment are related but there is a connection. No matter how rough it may seem, God will either give you deliverance from it or wisdom to persevere through it. 3) His guidance-He preserves the course of our life. If we will keep on His path and not be swayed to traverse different roads, then He protects us along the journey.
One more thing to be said in summary: Life doesn’t always make sense at the beginning or even in the middle, but verse 9 tells us it makes more sense the longer we follow God’s precepts. “Then you will understand what is right and just and fair — every good path.”

Pray with me: Lord, I want to know the wisdom, protection and guidance needed to live in the fear of the Lord. Help me to follow Your prescription for answers in my life.
