Lord Almighty-Jeremiah 50:33-34

Jeremiah 50:33-34 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: “The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to let them go. 34 Yet their Redeemer is strong; the Lord Almighty is his name. He will vigorously defend their cause so that he may bring rest to their land, but unrest to those who live in Babylon.”

During the time of captivity, the people of God faced hardship as slaves to the king of Babylon. Because of abandoning their faith in God and sharing their loyalty with other gods, their judgment was just. They had no way to free themselves and no relief was in sight. They were reaping what they had sown; the prophets had warned them numerous times in many ways to turn from their wicked practices.

In their state of oppression and with seemingly no hope of deliverance, Jeremiah gives them a word that is as true today as it was back then. The Redeemer, here called by His name the “Lord God Almighty”, is strong. The Hebrew idea behind the name of God “Almighty” is that of an army. The Lord is stronger than any oppressor or oppression and with His name comes a mighty army to deliver those who will believe His word. The Almighty Redeemer vowed to pay their ransom, defend their cause (plea), guarantee their return to freedom and give them rest from their enemy.

God’s Word stands stronger than any oppression of the enemy. You may feel the oppression of the enemy over you but be encouraged by His promises that God doesn’t forget His own and with His strong arm, He will defend you and defeat the oppressor of your life!

Pray with me: Lord, even when God’s people suffer because of their failures, You still give Your promise that You are coming like a mighty army to deliver those who are oppressed. Help me to always remember that the Lord Almighty will defend and deliver me as I stand upon His Word.
