Love and Faithfulness-Psalm 85:10-13

Psalm 85:10-13 “Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven. 12 The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest. 13 Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.”

The beautiful poetry at the end of Psalm 85 needs to be understood in the context of the subject of the Psalm. The Psalmist calls on God to forgive and restore blessings on his people who have sinned. In his plea, he asks God to remove His anger from them and prays that God would once again show His unfailing love. This is a truth that speaks to every generation of believers. When we continue in sin, we should not expect the favor of the Lord to remain in our life. But when we confess our sin and call on God’s mercy, He extends His righteous hand of blessing.

The Psalmist concludes with a series of parallel thoughts that express how the attributes of the Lord flow to those who are restored. Notice love and faithfulness are God’s commitment to us; righteousness and peace is God working in us. His repetition of faithfulness and righteousness in verse 11 are described further as to their source. Faithfulness (God’s attribute) must be modeled and righteousness (God’s attribute) will rest on His own people. Therefore, the resulting favor of the Lord will be seen in God’s provision and guidance (vv. 12-13) upon His people.

Pray with me: Lord, You continue to remind me over and over again that the spiritual blessing in my life is based on my commitment to ask for forgiveness when I fail. Help me to desire Your favor in every area of my life.
