Loving God’s Word-Psalm 119:129-135

Psalm 119:129-135 “Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. 130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. 131 I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.  132 Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name. 133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. 134 Redeem me from the oppression of men, that I may obey your precepts. 135 Make your face shine upon your servant and teach me your decrees.”

The psalmist describes God’s Word in many ways. Here he says they are “wonderful.” After his opening statement, the gives the reasons why he can say they are wonderful. First, it gives light to a lost soul. As you read, mediate and study His Word, the light of the Scriptures becomes brighter and brighter. Second, as a result of the light of the Word, God turns toward us and we can experience His mercy. In general, God is merciful to this world but for those who love His name, His mercy shines bright. Third, His wonderful Word gives direction to the believer. We have all experienced times when God’s Word has shown us insight into the direction of His will. Fourth, God redeems those who follow His word. What a promise! With confidence, we know that redemption is part of His plan for His people. Fifth, we experience the blessing of God. The Psalmist is thinking of the Aaronic blessing from Numbers 6:25 when he cites God’s blessing: “Make your face shine upon your servant.” Lastly, his Word is the great teacher of the wisdom and principles of life. We can always be amazed at how much God’s Word fills our heart and mind. They are a lifetime of treasures waiting to be discovered.

Pray with me: Lord, I am so thankful for Your Word; I want to gain wisdom and guidance as I read Your words and find the treasures of a lifetime as Your face shines on me.
