Our Advocate-1 John 2:1-2

1 John 2:1-2 “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

John writes to us from the perspective of a seasoned father. He calls us, “My dear children”. The word “children” here denotes an older child capable of understanding and making choices. Of course, sinless perfection is not his intention since humanity lives in a fallen state. The message involves his encouragement to believers by making every effort to keep their lives free from sin. But he also knows that believers live their lives on different spiritual levels. Therefore he reminds us that our righteous defense attorney, Jesus Christ, is poised to represent us in the role as our Advocate.

As further evidence to this fact, John tells us that God’s atoning sacrifice extends not merely to the sins of Christians but also to the sins of the whole world. In saying this, John was clearly affirming the view that Christ died for all. Some have mistakenly taken this thought and promote a Universalist approach to the Gospel meaning that everyone will be saved. The truth is there will be those who will not inherit the kingdom of God (Matthew 7:21-23; 1 Corinthians 6:9). Rather it means that anyone who hears the Gospel can be saved if he so desires (Romans 10:9-10). In context, however, John’s point is to remind us of the magnificent scope of Christ’s “atoning sacrifice” in order to assure us that His advocacy as the Righteous One on our behalf is fixed for all eternity.

Pray with me: Lord, as an imperfect vessel, I know that I must monitor my spiritual life. Help me to call upon my Advocate, Jesus Christ, for forgiveness and spiritual restoration when I sin.
