Our Boast is in the Lord-Jeremiah 9:23-24

Jeremiah 9:23-24 “This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.”

Jeremiah makes a very poignant and sobering warning to the people of Judah. It has a universal reach and without question summarizes man’s greatest failures. The fault lies in a man’s boasting. The pride of man can be summarized by these three things: wisdom, strength and riches. These are all things that bless people but, like everything else in this world, have no eternal value. As wise as a man may think he is, his wisdom can be right or it can be wrong. As strong as a man may think he is, his power will gradually diminish. As rich as a man may think he is, wealth cannot buy him eternal security.
Above human achievements, we should rather boast that we know God. The word “knows” implies more than a recognition that He exists. It is a deep intimate knowledge of God that is seen through His kindness (God’s loyal love), justice (God’s fair judgment) and righteousness (God’s standard for living).
As we read the passage surrounding the text, it suggests that many claim the general knowledge of God but they put their hope and trust in their own wisdom, strength and riches. Not a lot has changed over the centuries. Man is still self-absorbed and finds his value in what he has—not what he needs: the kindness, justice and righteousness that only comes from the Lord.
Pray with me: Lord, I know that there are things in my life that I need and You said You would provide for my daily sustenance. Help me to put my confidence in what is eternal because I want to understand and know You more.
