Our Creative God-Genesis 1:1-2

Genesis 1:1-2 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Genesi 1:1-2 «Nel principio Dio creò i cieli e la terra. 2 La terra era informe e vuota, le tenebre coprivano la faccia dell’abisso e lo Spirito di Dio aleggiava sulla superficie delle acque.»

The opening verses of the Bible provide the basis by which everything else that follows will make sense. The Bible has a beginning. If a person believes in God, then what is taught will be rich in answering life’s great questions. Conversely, if a person doesn’t believe in God, then the Bible becomes nothing more than a series of tales and wishes handed down to people desperate to make their own sense out of life. Sadly, it seems that most of the world has opted for the latter.
The one who believes the narrative as it is recorded, the potential for understanding life is as real as the verses that follow cataloging the six days of creation. In order for one to say “God created”, there must be an acceptance that there is no other explanation. The original language of the text makes it clear that the word for “create” is specific and only attributed to the work of God. The same word is used when David prayed for the mercy of God, “Create in me a clean heart.” (Psalm 51:10). God created and is still creating today. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The other central aspect of this word “create” is that of the universe (“the heavens”). The universe is God’s perfect expression of creation. Hebrews 11:3 reminds us, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” How marvelous are these opening verses that settle the question to humanity that without faith, we cannot comprehend the mysteries of our creative God. Job was at a dark time in his life when he heard the words of Elihu, “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.” Job 37:5.
Pray with me: Lord, I live in a world that tries every way possible to explain You out of the equation of life. Help me to stand strong for You and continue to experience the creative hand of God refreshing me every day.
