Resisting the devil-1 Peter 5:9-11

1 Peter 5:9-11 “Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

From the previous verse, we know that Peter is referring to the devil’s work of trying to destroy believers. There is a devil but the good news is that believers can resist him. The word “resist” suggests the idea of withstanding pressure. The same word is also found is James 4:7 when it states “Resist the devil”. We don’t attack the devil. To resist teaches us a posture of defense. We can’t be in a posture of defense unless we are totally committed to the strength and power behind our defense which is the Lord.

A half-committed believer has a weakened defense. His shield has holes in it. Soon he will not be able to stand because his partial commitment to the Lord has given the devil an opportunity to weaken him. James 1:8 says it this way: “That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”

Vigilance to our faith must be reinforced every day with the power that strengthens us in the Word of God and prayer. We can resist and stand firm with the confidence that our faith will sustain us.

This text also encourages us that we are not standing alone. There is an army of believers that face similar assaults by the enemy. They are learning the same defensive posture of resisting and standing firm in the faith as we are. We are stronger together.

Pray with me: Lord, I know the answer to resisting the attacks of the devil. Help me to follow the words of Peter who faced many attacks and yet remained strong in the faith.
