Righteous and Loving God-Psalm 145:17-20

Psalm 145:17-20 “The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.

18 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

20 The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.”

David opens up this portion of the psalm by examining two qualities of God’s attributes. First, that He is righteous in all His ways and second, He is loving to everything He has made. After stating these two, David then proceeds to tell us how God righteously and lovingly acts toward us. The origin of each one begins with us. God never forces His way or makes us into robots. He gives us free will to make the choice.

David mentions three acts that generate our security in our righteous loving God. If we call on Him, then He will be near. If we have a healthy fear of God, He fulfills (or completes) our desire by withholding what would hurt us and granting what is good for us. If we cry to Him, He saves us. If we love Him, He watches over us and will defeat our enemies.

The lessons for living a healthy spiritual life that flow from the Scriptures all follow a similar pattern. If we do what we know to be right, then God responds in supplying all our needs. At the end of the book of Philippians, Paul reminds the faithful believers of this truth; “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (4:19)

Pray with me:  Lord, I know that You are a righteous and loving God who answers me when I call. Help me to understand the principle of going to You first in order to experience Your work on my behalf.
