The Signs of His Coming-Luke 21:20-28

Luke 21:20-28 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Jesus had been teaching about the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the coming of the Lord. Both events follow similar signs. In this section, Jesus returns to the question about the temple. There are a number of events that occurred in the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in 80 A.D. that will be repeated in both earthly and cosmic signs of the coming of the Lord. Note with clarity these signs: Gentile domination and destruction of Jerusalem that would continue until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled (v. 24). The threats to Jerusalem have existed for thousands of years and Jerusalem has fallen on more than one occasion but this last one will occur just before the Messiah returns.
In addition to earthly signs, cosmic messages will also tell the story. The sun, moon, stars and the sea will cause the world to be perplexed at their unusual activity. A fearful world will blame everything possible except for the prophetic message that these events will be a precedent to the return of the Lord. But for those who know the signs of the time, it is not an occasion to be caught up in endless speculation. It is a time to look upward and rejoice because we will soon see our redemption coming in a cloud with power and glory! The phrase “is drawing near” comes from the idea of approaching an end. A cognate of the word means to “squeeze” something to the end. Think of a tube of toothpaste that can only be squeezed a few more times. As the world looks down in despair, believers can look up as their redemption is approaching.
Pray with me: Lord, I see more earthly and cosmic signs than I have ever seen before. Help me to be encouraged by Your Word and to communicate to others that these signs point us closer to the time of Your great plan of final redemption.
