Unity-Psalm 133

Psalm 133 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”

David had his share of enemies that pursued him. The danger and threats against him for much of his life were numerous but God protected him because His hand was on David’s life. We know that there are enemies to our spiritual life as well, i.e., the devil primarily. But we must also understand that sometimes within our own ranks, there can be division that halts the blessings of God.

David visualizes the blessings received when God’s people dwell together in unity. He uses two illustrations for us to remember. First, the imagery of Aaron being anointed when everyone was united under this ceremony. The oil symbolizes the united nation as it flowed down onto the breastplate where the names of the twelve tribes were listed.

Secondly, he pictures unity as they could view the dew covering Mount Hermon in the North to Mount Zion. As the heavy dew rested on the vegetation under it, it was refreshed, strengthened and growth continued throughout the hillside. These two images should encourage us to contend for the blessings of God as we worship together in the unity of faith.

Pray with me: Lord, I see the desire of David was to have unity among his own people. Help me to have that same desire to contend for unity among my fellow believers.
