Virtues in a Believer’s Life-Colossians 3:12-14

Colossians 3:12-14 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

Paul amplifies the thought of putting on the new self (v. 10) by saying that we should clothe ourselves with things that would demonstrate this; he lists appropriate attitudes or virtues that verify it. These virtues are opposite of those he listed in verses 8-9 (“anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips.”). The new self would be clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, bearing (put up) one another and forgiveness. Forgiveness is not a virtue that is always easy to display. It is God that must work in us when we see how God has forgiven us. Some of these virtues are mentioned in Ephesians 4:2 and Galatians 5:22-23.

The only thing that will make these virtues a reality is if we truly put on love. Love is mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13 as the greatest of all virtues. It is of supreme importance in our spiritual lives and makes every other virtue truly genuine. In verse 14, the phrase “perfect unity” in the original languages carries the idea of a bond of completeness. Let love from the Lord be the connective tissue of every virtue in our life.

Pray with me: Lord, I look at the list of attitudes or virtues that should be in the life of a believer and I admit that at times, I don’t wear some of these very well. Help me to deal with my weak areas and purposely ask that Your love rule over them.
