Walking in the Light-1 John 1:5-7

1 John 1:5-7 “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

The idea that “God is light” permeates the first epistle of John. When he says “the message we have heard from him”, he refers to the direct message from the lips of Jesus to him and the other disciples; this possibly comes from the passage in John 8:12 when Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” As light, God not only exposes man’s sin but also condemns it. If anyone walks in darkness, he is hiding from the truth which the light reveals (read John 3:19-20).

Since God is light, it would be correct to say that if a Christian walks in darkness, he really doesn’t have communion with light. John says “we lie and do not live by the truth.”  A Christian must determine where he is going to walk and for John, there was only one way. We all have had the experience of walking down a dark street or path without a flashlight; it would make anyone a little nervous. Psalms 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Don’t look for detours, shortcuts or deceptions in your walk with God. If you walk in the light, you will be able to see your way more clearly and have fellowship with others on the path. As we stay in the light, the relationship we have with the Lord will keep us purified.

Pray with me: Lord, I know that Your light is the only way. Help me to not be tempted to veer off Your path but always seek the light as You lead my steps.
